Public hygiene is one of our country’s great problems. Fixing dreadful sanitation in India requires not just building lavatories but also changing habits. Appalling situations of housing, sanitation, civic amenities, education, lack access to safe drinking water, proper sanitation facilities and health abound in urban slum clusters of Delhi.
The issue of toilets is more serious in urban areas rather than rural areas, because in rural areas, there are open spaces and fields, whereas in urban areas, spaces are cramped and open space is deficient.
A team from HRLN conducted a fact finding to investigate the condition of sanitation in Kalyanpuri JJ cluster, also known as Dhobi Ghat, after the installment of toilets and bathrooms. The environmental conditions, socio-economic background of residents and presence of formal and informal political channels were given special consideration when examining the sanitation services provided by the government under the mandate declared by DUSIB, in that location. The survey was done with the help of two key informants, supplemented with oral and written sources.
