On April 15 2014, the Supreme Court of India passed a landmark judgment in the case of National Legal Services Authority vs. Union of India & Others (NALSA) that gave legal recognition to trans identity and also placed various obligations on the Central and State Government with the aim of creating a political and legal environment that would enable trans persons to reach their full potential.
HRLN conducted a ‘People’s Inquiry into the Status of the Implementation of the NALSA Judgment’ on the 2nd November 2016 at the School of Social Sciences Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The Independent People's Tribunal constituted a jury that investigated the non-implementation of the NALSA judgment and the resulting human rights abuses against transgender persons. The jury heard depositions from representatives of 18 states and shared their interim findings and recommendations pertaining to the implementation of the NALSA Judgment.
